Why it matters: Vendors sell "AI visibility" with bold promises. Knowing what is documented, what is guesswork, and how to ask for evidence protects your budget and your credibility.
By the end you can:
- Explain what GEO does and doesn't cover
- Separate durable work from speculation
- Evaluate vendor claims with a checklist
- Measure transparently
Learn (15 min)
1. What GEO means (5 min)
GEO (generative engine optimization) is a broad term for efforts to improve how a business and its content show up in generative AI search and assistant products. There's no cross-platform standard or ranking formula; each product retrieves, summarizes, and cites differently, and may change without notice.
2. Durable work first (5 min)
Google's published guidance for its AI search features emphasizes the same fundamentals as ordinary SEO: crawlable, indexable, helpful, reliable content, plus clear technical structure. Its documentation says no special schema or extra file is required for those features, and describes controls for how content may appear. Verify the current guidance and your Search Console options directly. Other AI products follow their own rules, so check each platform's documentation.
Practical, durable steps: clear entity information (who you are, where, what you do) consistent across your site and profiles; original, specific content; accurate structured data on visible content; fast, accessible pages; real reviews and third-party mentions earned honestly.
3. Measure without overclaiming (5 min)
Track impressions, clicks, qualified visits, conversions, and referral sources your analytics can identify. Third-party "AI visibility" tools estimate mentions by sampling prompts; coverage and methodology vary. Record the tool, date, prompt set, and method before comparing. No tactic can guarantee a mention, citation, or position.
Apply (15 min)
Worked example (3 min). A vendor promises "#1 in every AI answer in 30 days with our special file." Due diligence: Which platforms exactly? Show documentation supporting the method. Provide prior client results with dates, prompts, and methodology. What happens if there's no change? Are mentions purchased or fabricated? Result: no documentation, no methodology, so decline.
Lab (7 min): Vendor/claim checklist.
- Write 8 questions you'd ask any "AI visibility" vendor (platform, evidence, method, guarantees, cost, exit terms).
- Pick one claim you've seen online and test it against official documentation.
- Draft a small manual tracking sheet: 10 customer-style prompts × 3 AI products × date, noting whether your business is mentioned and what's accurate or wrong.
Deliverable: A vendor checklist and a tracking sheet template. You're done when: The tracking sheet records methodology, not just results.
Check yourself (5 min)
- Is GEO a universal standard?
- What does Google's guidance prioritize?
- Does special schema guarantee AI citations?
- Scenario: A report shows your brand "up 40% in AI visibility." What do you ask?
- Can anyone guarantee an AI mention?
