AEO and Answer-Friendly Content

- Lesson 31
Why it matters: People increasingly ask full questions and expect direct answers. Pages that answer clearly, with evidence and limits, serve readers and are easier for any system to understand, without gaming anything.
By the end you can:
- Explain what AEO does and doesn't mean
- Structure content around real questions
- Write a direct, supported answer
- Measure usefulness honestly
Learn (15 min)
1. What AEO means (5 min)
AEO (answer engine optimization) is a broad industry label for making information easy to understand and retrieve in search and assistant experiences. It is not a single standard or ranking system. Start from the questions customers actually ask (sales calls, emails, reviews, Search Console queries).
2. Structure for comprehension (5 min)
Pattern for each question: direct answer first → context → steps/examples → limits → evidence.
### How long does a corporate headshot session take?
Most sessions take about 10 minutes per person, plus setup time.
A 12-person team is typically on site for two to three hours.
...what affects it (lighting, wardrobe changes, group shots)...
Limits: Large teams with outfit changes take longer; we confirm timing in your quote.
Cite authoritative evidence for factual or high-stakes claims. Don't create a separate thin page for every phrasing; consolidate related questions.
3. Measure outcomes (5 min)
Pick measures tied to the page's job: organic clicks, qualified inquiries, assisted conversions, engagement, or fewer repetitive support questions. Search Console shows queries, pages, impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position, but not every question asked, nor proof that a format caused a result.
Apply (15 min)
Worked example (3 min). Clinic page on appointment prep never says what to bring. Direct answer: "Bring your photo ID, insurance card, and a list of current medications. Arrive 15 minutes early to complete forms." Supporting details: forms link, parking, fasting instructions where applicable. Verify against the clinic's official policy before publishing.
Lab (7 min): Question inventory.
- Collect 10 real customer questions (emails, calls, Search Console).
- Group into 3–4 topics.
- For one topic, write the heading, a 2-sentence direct answer, 3 supporting points, and a limit.
- Name the metric you'd watch and the date you'll review it.
Deliverable: A question list and one drafted answer section. You're done when: The first two sentences fully answer the question on their own.
Check yourself (5 min)
- Is AEO a technical specification?
- What goes first in an answer section?
- Why state limitations?
- Scenario: Someone suggests 200 near-identical "FAQ" pages. Why not?
- What can Search Console tell you here?
