Google Ads Conversion Tracking

Why it matters: Ads bidding systems optimize toward whatever you call a conversion. If that's a refreshable thank-you page, you'll pay for junk.
By the end you can:
- Define conversion actions and choose primary vs. secondary
- Choose a tagging method
- Verify counts and values
- Avoid duplicates
Learn (15 min)
1. Define the outcome (5 min)
A conversion is a meaningful action: qualified lead, call, booking, purchase. Decide: primary (used for bidding/optimization) or secondary (observation), counting rule (one per click or every), value (fixed, dynamic, or none), and how to avoid counting refreshes.
2. Implement once (5 min)
Measure website actions with the Google tag or via GTM, and use a conversion linker where your setup needs it so ad-click information is preserved. GA4 key events can also be imported or linked. Choose one architecture and check for duplicate tags and duplicate conversion actions.
3. Verify and interpret (5 min)
Use Tag Assistant and test submissions to confirm the right event fires once with the intended value/currency. Allow time for reports to populate. Check consent behavior and data quality, and don't optimize toward an event until it reflects the business outcome (a qualified lead beats a raw form fill).
Apply (15 min)
Worked example (3 min).
| Conversion | Type | Count | Value | Primary? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quote form submitted (success state) | Website | One per click | none (or estimated) | Yes |
| Click-to-call button | Website event | One | none | Secondary |
| Qualified lead (imported from CRM) | Offline/CRM | One | deal value | Yes, when reliable |
| Test: submit form in Preview, confirm one conversion in Tag Assistant and diagnostics, refresh the thank-you page and confirm no second conversion. |
Lab (7 min): Define and test.
- List your site's top three actions and classify each as primary/secondary.
- Write the firing rule that prevents duplicates.
- Write a test script (steps + expected result).
- Describe how you'd check that GA4 and Google Ads aren't double counting.
Deliverable: A conversion definition table and test script. You're done when: Refreshing the thank-you page can't create another conversion.

- What commonly causes duplicate counts?
- Scenario: Smart bidding optimizes toward junk form fills. What do you change?
- Should every event be primary?

Common mistakes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Inflated conversions | Tag fires on reload; double imports | Fire on success event; dedupe |
| Poor lead quality | Optimizing to raw form fills | Import qualified outcomes; tighten qualification |
| No data | Tag misconfigured | Test with Tag Assistant; check consent |
