Lesson 46 / 50 · Version 2.2.0

Constant Contact Campaigns

Level
Beginner–Intermediate
Duration
15 min learn + 15 min apply
Prerequisites:
Basic email and contact-list concepts

Why it matters: Email works when people want it. Permission, relevance, and clean data protect your sender reputation, and your relationship with subscribers.

By the end you can:

  • Build a permission-based audience
  • Segment for relevance
  • Design a short automation with exit rules
  • Read results without over-trusting opens

Learn (15 min)

1. Permission and data quality (5 min)

Email people who gave the kind of permission your message requires. Record source and date of consent. Honor unsubscribes and suppression. Avoid purchased, scraped, or stale lists. Never re-add an unsubscribed person from an old import. Constant Contact's permission policy sets expectations; also follow your jurisdiction's rules and your own policy.

2. Segment for relevance (5 min)

A segment is a saved subset by attributes or behavior (interest, customer type, recent engagement). Keep fields accurate and minimal. Craft: a clear subject, recognizable sender name, accessible body, one main call to action, working unsubscribe. Preview on desktop and mobile; send a test.

3. Automate a helpful journey (5 min)

Example: welcome email after sign-up → useful resource 3 days later. Define trigger, eligibility, delays, exit conditions (unsubscribe, bounce, conversion), and suppression. Review bounces, unsubscribes, complaints, clicks, and conversions. Opens are unreliable: privacy features and automated systems can create opens without a person reading. Weigh opens alongside clicks and business outcomes. Authenticate your sending domain following Constant Contact's current instructions (Lessons 42–44).

Apply (15 min)

Worked example (3 min). Guide-download welcome flow: Source = "Free guide" form with explicit opt-in checkbox. Email 1: send immediately with the guide link. Email 2: 3 days later, a short helpful tip and one invitation to book a call. Exit: unsubscribe, hard bounce, or booking. Excluded: anyone unsubscribed or without recorded consent. Outcome: booked calls and clicks, not opens.

Lab (7 min): Design a two-email flow.

  1. Define the sign-up source and consent wording.
  2. Write both subject lines and the single call to action for each.
  3. List exit and suppression rules.
  4. Choose three metrics and what "healthy" looks like for each.

Deliverable: A flow spec. You're done when: No path emails someone who opted out.

Check yourself (5 min)

  1. What should exist before adding someone to a promotional audience?
  2. What should an automation define?
  3. May you re-add unsubscribed contacts from an old import?
  4. Scenario: Open rates jumped to 80% overnight but clicks are flat. What might explain it?
  5. Name two health signals besides opens.
